Did You Know? : The heat in the city is intensified during the summer and is most noticeable at night. It makes it so difficult for those living on the streets to get relief from the heat. With dangerously high temperatures, we need your continued support with our Emergency Summer Heat Campaign. You can donate online by going to www.trinityrescue.org/heat/ or you can bring donations of bottled water, sports drinks, towels and toiletries directly to the mission at 622 W. Union St., Jacksonville, FL 32202.

Association of Gospel Rescue Missions: Staff members from TRM recently attended the AGRM National Convention held in Jacksonville. They were able to attend training sessions and network with others in the ministry. Trinity Rescue Mission was also awarded “Certified Excellent” by the AGRM.

Summer Fun: Thank you to the Deerwood Rotary Club for their generous donation to the Women & Children’s Center for summer activities. Through their continued support, we are able to take the WCC residents on field trips that allow the children to experience summer in ways they may not have otherwise had. NEW Job Resource Center and Computer Lab: A huge Thank You to the employees from NICE. They took time from their busy schedules to help create a Job Resource Center and Computer Lab in our Women & Children’s Center during their NICE Global Community Month, Make a Difference. Through their hard work and generous financial support, the WCC now has a dedicated space for women to learn, submit job applications and continue to better themselves. The lab consists of multiple work stations, a classroom space and a job posting board. With this great, new resource, our residents will now be able to work towards their vocational goals without having to leave the WCC.

Spring Update

Spring Baby Shower: It is such a blessing to be able to help expectant mothers at the Women & Children’s Center, and we are very excited to be expecting the arrival of three little babies very soon. We want to shower these sweet little ones and their mothers with everything they will need in their first few months, and we would like to help replenish some of the constant baby needs we have at the mission. Search & Rescue Outreach: Our first event was held on February 20, 2016, and it was a great success! Our team was able to reach out to those who are living on the streets. They delivered a hot breakfast, new socks, warm hats and scarves, and basic hygiene items. We are already looking forward to our next Search & Rescue day to be held later this month.

Easter: We will be celebrating Easter with our residents and guests with a special meal on Good Friday, March 25, 2016. On Easter weekend, we will have activities for the children and they will all receive Easter baskets. Pray with us that everyone who celebrates with us over Easter learns about the meaning and value of the Resurrection.

Vision Screenings: This month we will be offering free vision screenings provided by Vision Is Priceless to our residents in the Women and Children’s Center. Vision Is Priceless has already completed screenings at the Freedom Farm. One obstacle for many of our clients to overcome is the inability to access vision care. Eyesight is important for our residents to participate in our programs. We are looking forward to connecting our residents to this great resource.

Special Guests and Chapel Renovation: Special thanks to Scott Herndon and the Surface Removal Systems team for donating their time, materials and labor to resurface our chapel floor. It looks great! We were able to coordinate the renovation with an amazing special event lunch with The Salty Dog Food Truck and My Season Chicken & Ribs. To top everything off, we had a special visit from the Jacksonville Jaguars Chaplain Anthony Johnson and players Tyson Alualu and Carson Tinker.

Prayer Requests: Please be in prayer for those who are in need and homeless over the next few months. The heat over the summer is harsh and can take its toll on a person’s health. We want their hearts and minds open to know they can seek refuge at Trinity Rescue Mission.

WCC Dorm Makeover: We would like to say thank you to the Sisterhood of Servants and the S.O.S Girls for all of their efforts in giving one of our WCC dorm rooms a makeover. They spent many hours sewing handmade quilts for each of the ten beds, painted the room, and painted Psalm 46:10 on the wall, “Be still and know that I am God.” They did a great job!

Volunteers Needed: The Association of Gospel Rescue Missions is having their Annual Convention in Jacksonville, FL June 7 -10, 2016. We are looking for volunteers who are willing to help at the convention and at the mission. Cold and Homelessness

Helping Homeless People Survive the Tough Winter Weather

Even in Florida, it can get cold outside!   A frigid winter weather pattern is predicted for Jax this week with cold temperatures and a blustery wind.

Since Trinity Rescue Mission offers free emergency meals and shelter, we are often full and crowded during the coldest of winter days, which keeps some people away.  Also, some people living outside do not live in proximity to the rescue mission and relocating downtown takes them away from work or the safety of the area of town that they know best.

If you see someone living outside, you might be interested in personally doing something to help them.  Here are several ideas from our friends at the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions to offer practical help to people trying to survive without shelter during the bitter months of winter.

  1. Put together “cold kits” with hand warmer packets, lip balm, a few pairs of socks, a knit hat, a scarf, a handkerchief, a few large black garbage bags, and a gift certificate to McDonald’s or other local fast food restaurant that serves hot coffee. Put it all inside a reusable bag.
  2. Donate blankets to rescue missions or give them directly to those living on the street. While the silver “space blankets” are cheap and portable, many homeless people don’t want to attract attention to themselves, which a reflective silver covering can do.
  3. Keep information and directions to your local rescue mission, along with some bus passes, in your car or wallet to hand out when you see someone in need of shelter.  Remember:  Trinity Rescue Mission is ALWAYS free and we often fill up all available spaces in the heart of the winter and summer.  However, we take in as many people as we can without violating fire and life safety codes.
  4. Hand out cups of hot chocolate or coffee to people holding signs on street corners.
  5. Offer your unneeded coats to folks staying on the street. Or purchase some secondhand coats from local thrift stores for them.
  6. Of course, if you encounter someone who is in a health crisis, immediate danger or who has a child living homeless, call 9-1-1.

If you do decide to personally bless someone living outside, be safe.  Never go alone or outside of a publically visible area that you feel is safe.  Also, do your ministering in daylight and always take your phone.  This caution is not meant to scare you, have fun and bless others, just be aware of your surroundings.
